Folks in Johns Creek can drive on Old Alabama Road again, but they might notice an abundance of men in hardhats on the road and a new bump in the stretch of the road between Buice Road and Waits Ferry Crossing.

A water main break on Thursday led to a sinkhole, which measured 20 to 30 feet wide. This caused many in the area to lose water and the road to be closed several hours, officials said.

Since then, the sinkhole has been filled with asphalt and the road is open. Edie Damann, a spokeswoman for Johns Creek, said that water has been turned back on for all affected neighborhoods.

Damann said the asphalt patch can support large trucks and it will be there for a few months, but motorists should still use caution in the area. The patch and surrounding road will eventually be replaced.

Fulton County spokeswoman April Majors told the AJC on Thursday that the water outage was due to “material and age” of a 12-inch cast iron pipe and that “about 300” customers near Old Alabama Road were affected.

The water main break caused part of Old Alabama Road in Johns Creek to cave in.
