Police are investigating the death of a 21-year-old Gwinnett County man who was found in a shot-up car outside a DeKalb County apartment.

Darin Thurman Jr. had a gunshot wound to the chest and left arm when an officer discovered the body after an anonymous 911 call on June 10, a police report said. The Lawrenceville resident was alone, slumped over in the 2016 Nissan Sentra outside Austin Oaks apartments on Glenwood Road.

DeKalb police said Tuesday there are no suspects yet in the case.

The report said the victim’s 19-year-old brother arrived on the scene 20 minutes after police and said he’d been with the victim during the shooting. They were in DeKalb to meet up with women, the brother said, and then an unknown gunman began firing on the car as they waited in the parking lot.

The brother said he ran away to call 911.

A witness who wanted to remain anonymous called 911 at the same time, saying they’d heard three to five gunshots, the report said.

But an officer saw eight bullet holes in the driver’s side of the car.

No additional information was available Tuesday.
