A home in Lawrenceville collapsed during a Wednesday afternoon fire.

A 75-year-old woman has been found dead in a Gwinnett County home that was destroyed by a fire.

Firefighters responded to the Lawrenceville home shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday and the fire was deemed under control at 3:31 p.m., said Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Tommy Rutledge.

The woman was not identified by authorities as of 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. Her injuries were consistent with the fire but her exact cause of death has not yet been determined by the medical examiner, Rutledge said.

The home on Brandon Square had already begun to collapse by the time a fire crew arrived, and a neighbor told them somebody may have still been inside. Firefighters exited the home before the roof collapsed. They continued to search for people inside once it was safe to go back in, Rutledge said.

The fire is believed to have begun in a formal living room at the front of the home, Rutledge said. There were “a number of potential ignition sources” that investigators have not been able to rule out yet.

The home is considered a total loss due to the fire, Rutledge said. The heat of the flames also melted vinyl siding on a neighboring home.

Fire investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the blaze, Rutledge said, but it is not believed to be suspiscious. The woman’s body is being turned over to the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office for identification and to determine cause of death. Family members arrived at the home Wednesday afternoon and are meeting with fire investigators.
