A local canine has a new hometown hero after being rescued from a burning home.

When Gwinnett County firefighters responded to a Lawrenceville house fire Thursday morning, they found all four family members already safely evacuated.

As the firefighters started to battle the fire, family members said a dog and cat were still trapped inside.

Firefighters entered the home and rescued the small dog, but were "unable to locate the cat," according to Gwinnett County firefighter captain Tommy Rutledge.

Authorities believe the cat was able to escape the blaze.

The crew "did a great job of stopping the fire from spreading," Rutledge said.

The fire department said the fire accidentally started after burning incense was left unattended. No injuries were reported.
