A woman watched as her boyfriend drowned Sunday night in Lake Peachtree thinking he was initially playing a prank, officials said.

James Andre Coverson, 32, Luthersville, and his girlfriend were swimming in the lake about 6:30 p.m. when she noticed they were in deep water, Peachtree City police Lt. Odilia Bergh said.

“She turned around, but when she looked back, she saw him go under,” Bergh said. “When he didn’t come back up, she realized he wasn’t joking and called 911.”

Emergency services arrived within 10 minutes, found Coverson and administered CPR. He was taken to Fayette Piedmont Hospital, where he later died.

Coverson’s drowning was the first of the year at the lake, Bergh said.
