Georgia Muslims take out ad to condemn shootings

A coalition of Georgia Muslims are running a full-page advertisement in Friday’s editions of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution condemning the recent deadly shootings in San Bernardino, Calif.

Twenty-one groups signed onto the ad, ranging from mosques to local Islamic centers to the local chapter for the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

“The Atlanta Muslim community expresses profound sorrow over the mass shooting in San Bernardino that claimed the lives of 14 innocent people last Wednesday,” the ad read.

It encouraged Georgians to visit a local Islamic center to learn more about Islam.

“Given the intense climate, we understand that our fellow Georgians may have unanswered questions and concerns about Muslim beliefs in general as well as our particular position toward repeated tragedies, such as the San Bernardino shootings,” the ad stated.

“Therefore, several local mosques and other local organizations are opening their doors to visitors,” it said.

The California shootings were carried about by Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, a husband and wife team. Malik posted a pledge of allegiance to ISIS on Facebook shortly before the attacks, and the FBI is investigating the massacre as an act of terrorism.
