A Coweta County nonprofit organization says three people stole a generator off a trailer used to take food to more than 70 families every week.

Alison Wallace, the executive director of Bridging the Gap in Newnan, said on social media the theft is devastating because that generator allows them to pick up food from local stores and feed the community, which they have been doing since 2009.

But after more than 900 people shared Wallace’s post with surveillance video showing the theft early Saturday, supporters pitched in and bought a new generator the next day, Channel 2 Action News reported.

This isn’t the first time the business has been burglarized.

Last November, bicycles and gifts for needy children during the holidays were stolen from the storehouse used by Bridging the Gap. After guitars, bicycles and other gifts were taken, the local community stepped up and made sure children would still receive gifts.

Similarly, people pitched in earlier this week and Wallace will be able to fix the trailer and upgrade the security system they use.

Police have recovered the stolen generator and identified three suspects.

“God will take something that is broken and horrible and make something beautiful from it every single time,” Wallace told Channel 2.
