The Georgia Department of Transportation hopes to have two to three lanes open on I-20 westbound by 5 p.m. today, with the entire highway reopened as soon as noon Tuesday.

GDOT spokeswoman Natalie Dale said the agency is using ground-penetrating radar to ensure the ground other the other lanes is stable before reopening them.

Dale did not disclose the specific cause for the highway’s crumbling, but said it was related to utility work.

Laura Creekmur, a spokeswoman for Atlanta Gas Light, confirmed a contractor for the company was doing work filling an old line at the site. She also declined to give a specific cause, but said there was no gas explosion or leak and said the company is investigating.
