Former Woodstock Mayor Long dies

William G. “Bill” Long, a former Woodstock mayor and City Council member who devoted more than four decades of his life to service to the city, died Nov. 4. He was 89.

Viewing will be from noon to 2 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Nov. 6, at Marietta Funeral Home, 915 Piedmont Road. The funeral service is 11 a.m., Nov. 7, at Little River Methodist Church, 12455 Highway 92, Woodstock.

Long was born Dec. 16, 1927, graduated from McEachern High School, Powder Springs, in 1943, and married June Long on June 16, 1956, according to his obituary. He was mayor of Woodstock from 1974 to 1977 and served on the council in 1967 and 1968, 1973 and from 1984 to 2005. He also served on the Planning Commission and as a municipal court judge.

Woodstock’s senior center was named after him, as was the interchange of Ridgewalk Parkway and I-575. “Totaling over forty years of service to the city of Woodstock, he was a true icon to Woodstock,” said Mayor Donnie Henriques.
