The old Department of Driver Services building at 278 McElroy Road in Fayetteville will soon be demolished to make way for a new fire station. The building has been vacant since November 2016 and was not deemed suitable for renovation because of moisture problems and the significant remodeling required to bring it up to current code.

For fire station construction, which was approved in the FY2017 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax project budget, the site will require $450,000 worth of fill dirt for site preparation. When the Board of Commissioners approved the demolition at its Jan. 11 meeting, it asked that options for sewer system connection be explored, since the existing septic system is not usable.
