A new form of sports competition is being introduced at Fayette County public schools.

Electronic sports, or esports, involves the competitive playing of video games between one or more individuals or teams. Several teams have been formed at Fayette County and Sandy Creek high schools, but only 26 of the 130 students who expressed interest in the program are currently participating because of the limited number of games available. Esports teams can consist of students representing a mix of grade levels and genders, and Fayette coach Will Cannon said most of the students who participate “are not involved in any traditional sports.”

Esports scholarships are offered at more than 200 colleges and universities, which the county says offers its students “additional opportunities to earn scholastic recognition.”
