A steep increase in the number of cats at the Cobb County animal shelter has led to a steep decrease in the price of adoption for all pets at the shelter.

“We have had an explosion of kittens,” said AikWah Leow with Cobb’s communications department.

In the last month, the county has seen a 68 percent increase in the average number of kittens and a 35 percent uptick of cats at the shelter, she said.

Because of that, the county decided to let folks adopt shelter cats six months or younger for free through June.

Cats older than six months and dogs of any age cost $60 in June. The regular price for kittens, older cats and dogs is $115.

All pets have been spayed or neutered, are current on shots and have been microchipped, according to the county. Dogs have been checked for heartworms and cats have been checked for feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus.

The shelter is located at 1060 Al Bishop Drive in Marietta.
