You might want to wait before you call the house sitter before heading to Grandma’s house. Duluth police will keep an eye on your home for free.

The Duluth Police Department offers a free “vacation house check” service for city residents who will be out of town and are concerned about break-ins or other crime. Officers will check homes at least twice a day for residents who use the service.

The department has an online form that residents can use to sign up to have their home monitored while they're gone. The form asks for details including how long you'll be gone, what kind of alarms and security systems you may have and which lights are meant to be left on. You must also list two emergency contacts.

The service is only offered to city of Duluth residents, so make sure you’re in city limits before registering.
