A driver was killed when his car crashed into a MARTA bus Friday morning in southwest Atlanta.

Police responded to a call about an accident in the 2500 block of Campbellton Road just before 7:50 a.m., Atlanta police Lt. Dorian Graham said. A 2011 Chevy Malibu driven by Barrett Murriel, 28, of Atlanta, was headed west on Campbellton Road when it veered into the east lane and hit the bus traveling along route 83, which is MARTA’s Campbellton/Greenbriar route.

Nine passengers on the bus, including the driver, were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Graham said.

Helen Grier, a 34-year resident of the area, said she heard a “big boom,” looked down and saw a car crashed into a phone pole on one side of the street and the bus on the other.

The Atlanta Fire Department worked to extricate those involved in the crash. Investigators are working to determine the cause.

“Right now we’re not sure if sleep was involved or texting,” Graham said.

Grier said she’s seen plenty of accidents in the area, and neighbors have complained that trees need to be cut.

“Something has got to be done to slow the traffic down on Campbellton Road,” Grier said.
