A young DeKalb County man accused of gunning down a 16-year-old boy for his backpack has been arrested by deputies.

Adaren Kemond Carter, 21, of Decatur is charged with felony murder in the May 7 death of Tyler LaFonte Bingham of Lithonia. Warrants for Carter, who was arrested Wednesday at a gas station in southeast Atlanta, allege that he shot the teen while stealing the backpack.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. on Cody Court, a residential street off Wellborn Road.

Carter also faces charges of theft by receiving stolen property. He is accused of taking possession of a Smith and Wesson 9-millimeter pistol that had been stolen from a Cartersville firefighter, warrants say. That crime allegedly happened Wednesday at the gas station.

Further information wasn’t immediately available.

Carter is in the DeKalb jail without bond.
