More than 4,800 gallons of sewage spilled from a force main in Snellville on Wednesday, the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources said.

The spill occurred at 1958 Tanglewood Dr. and the department was notified shortly after noon. It took more than three hours to stop the flow, coming from a cracked pipe. By 3:15 p.m., the overflow stopped.

Some of the sewage entered Watson Creek, the department said.

The department raked the area and spread lime in order to mitigate the effects of the spill. Signs were posted to alert residents to the spill and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division was notified. Exposure to raw sewage generally poses the risk of diseases and infections including gastro-enteritis and E. coli.
