A South Gwinnett High School student was found with a gun in his backpack Monday morning, according to a letter sent to parents.

Shamal Kyreek Bascom, 17, was charged with possession of a pistol or revolver by a person under 18, carrying a weapon in a school safety zone, willful obstruction of law enforcement and reckless conduct.

Bascom was in in-school suspension when a school resource officer attempted to question him about an unrelated issue. When the officer approached Bascom, Bascom took his backpack and ran out of the school, according to a Gwinnett County Schools police report.

The officer saw Bascom take a metal object and throw it out of the bag; the object was a fully loaded 9mm gun, the report said. Bascom was arrested and taken to the Gwinnett County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.

In addition to criminal charges, Bascom will also be disciplined by the school, the letter to parents said.
