The Milton City Council has approved a settlement in which a cable TV provider will pay the city $65,398.44 in missed franchise fees.

Comcast Cable Communications LLC will pay the fees after an audit discovered the underpayment, according to a memo to the council by Assistant City Manager Stacey Inglis.

The city hired the Georgia Municipal Association for telecommunications and right-of-way management in October 2017. An audit by the association showed that not only had the city’s franchise agreement with Comcast expired, but the franchise fees owed to the city had not been calculated properly, Inglis said.

The city can collect fees dating back three years at most, hence the $65,398.44 figure.

“We are currently working with the attorneys to renew our franchise agreement with Comcast,” Inglis said. “It should be ready to present to council for approval at one of the regular meetings in February.”
