The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved two contracts totaling $124,000 to have Southeastern Engineering Inc. draw up plans to replace two conventional intersections with roundabouts.
The county will pay Southeastern $60,000 to design a roundabout for the three-way intersection of Wiley Bridge and Cox roads in southeast Cherokee. Wiley Bridge is free-flowing, while Cox has a stop sign, according to a staff report to commissioners.
Southeastern also will earn $64,000 designing a roundabout to replace a skewed “T” intersection at Woodstock Road and Victory Drive, an all-way stop in southwest Cherokee.
The engineering consultant will take previously done traffic studies, “evaluate the findings … and make a recommendation as to the best solution and configuration for the proposed roundabout, based upon existing roadway geometry, existing utility locations, existing and proposed right-of-way and adjacent development layouts and total project cost,” staff said.
