The Cherokee County Recycling Center on Blalock Road in Canton will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 25, after the county Board of Commissioners approved a new schedule of mostly higher fees and a list of items that will not be accepted.

The fee for a tire on a rim, for example, goes to $7 from $5; an outdoor grill, to $5 from $3; and a riding lawnmower, to $20 from $15. Fees for lawn furniture and metal folding chairs remain $5. Items never priced before, such as washers, dryers, stoves and refrigerators, will now have fees of $15.

Cash will no longer be accepted for payment, only checks or credit cards, County Manager Jerry Cooper told commissioners.

Items not accepted include televisions, car batteries, wood or plastic furniture, mattresses, ferrous metals, building materials, yard waste and paint, motor oil, antifreeze or other hazardous liquids.

The recycling center was temporarily closed in August after two employees were arrested and charged with felony theft for allegedly accepting money for access to metal at the facility.
