Cherokee County has outsourced some of the functions of the tax assessor’s office, awarding a $229,450-a-year contract to a Charlotte, N.C.-based consulting firm that does similar work for Gwinnett County.

Tax Management Associates Inc. will take over personal property listing administration and auditing services, work previously performed by four county employees. The county Board of Commissioners voted to approve the contract July 18 after the Board of Tax Assessors gave its approval July 13.

The contract runs through Sept. 30, 2018, and will automatically renew for additional one-year terms unless terminated.

“The Tax Assessors Office estimates that the increase in productivity and experience offered by Tax Management Associates will offer a greater return on investment and a higher degree of accuracy in personal property valuation,” according to a staff report to the county board.

Tax Management has handled personal property listings for Gwinnett since 2009 and has performed nearly 12,000 audits in Georgia, discovering close to $4 billion in value, the firm said in its proposal to Cherokee. It also has worked for DeKalb, Forsyth and other Georgia counties.
