Doraville police said all lanes of Buford Highway were closed at 4:30 p.m., just in time for rush hour on a day when metro Atlanta roads are choked by snow and ice.

The closure is at McElroy Road.

“Georgia Power and DeKalb County Traffic Engineers have been notified,” police said in a Facebook post. “Please avoid the area and don’t get on the roads unless it’s an emergency!”

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
