Schoolchildren gathered at the Gardens Apartments at 3460 Buford Highway on Monday morning to board their school buses. The city of Atlanta and Clayton, DeKalb, Fayette, Forsyth and Gwinnett counties started school on Monday, Aug. 9.

As thousands of schoolchildren across Georgia return to class, school officials are being cautious during outdoor activities as temperatures remain in the 90s. Some recess and sports practices are held indoors or canceled because of the weather.

Gwinnett County schoolchildren head from the bus to class. The county said it got 100,000 applicants for 240 open teaching positions for the new school year.
