The Garage Door Studio in Avondale Estates is moving from Center Street to the Tudor Village Building fronting North Avondale Road and wrapping around to Clarendon Avenue. According to owners Jen Singh and Rachel Herzog the new location will open 10 a.m. April 1.

The relocation nearly fills the block-long structure, the city’s downtown centerpiece since it was built in 1924. Fisher Paty, a partner with Oakhurst Realty, which owns the building, said it’s 98 percent leased with only one vacancy remaining.

When Oakhurst purchased the 27,000 square foot building in June 2012, it was crumbling in places and barely half full. The wrap-around space, home to many businesses over the decades had been vacant for nearly two years.

Initially the city’s pharmacy, Singh and Herzog had stripped seven layers of floors to excavate the original terrazzo base. It has also unveiled the original interior brick walls, with one side showing a large ad for a soft drink called Ko-Nut that was manufactured during the World War I era.

The Garage Door, which opened in 2014, sells work by local artists including jewelry, fine art, pottery, textiles and leather goods.
