Where a rundown strip mall once stood, a new Publix will open in northwest Atlanta Wednesday morning.

The 45,600-square-foot grocery store, located at 2275 Marietta Blvd. NW, will open after a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Mayor Kasim Reed, city councilmembers including Felicia Moore, store manager Chris Jacobs and South Carolina-based developer Edens are expected to attend, according to government press releases.

The project includes 70,000 square feet of retail, including the Publix. A second phase will include 345 apartments and more retail.

The $95 million development is expected to create about 300 permanent jobs and $2 million in annual sales tax revenue.

“It’s a grocery store more than a decade in the making,” the city council’s news release said.

The shopping center off Marietta Boulevard was delayed for years by legal challenges that held up promised public incentives. The project will ultimately receive $5.5 million in various city incentive programs.
