Atlanta police scale back child abduction investigation

Investigators continued to follow up Thursday on a possible child abduction, but no children have been reported missing by a parent or guardian, Atlanta police said.

Police scaled back their search and investigation Wednesday night after the boy thought to be gone was found safe.

"We have yet to verify that there was indeed an abduction," Atlanta police spokesman John Chafee said.

A child was said to have been taken from a playground in southwest Atlanta on Wednesday afternoon.

"It does not appear that this was a made-up story. We don't know if this was an abduction, though," Chafee said. He said authorities are still asking questions.

Authorities conducted the search in the area of the 300 block of Fairburn Road around the Central Methodist Garden Apartments and the complex next door. No child has been reported missing in the area.

Two boys said that their friend, known by the nickname "Boss," was taken away in a car by a man after being offered candy.

"Boss walked up and said, ‘Yes,'" Dequintavius Gresham said.

"He went close to the car and he snatched him back into the car," Jadarius Gresham said.

Jadarius said he didn't want to get in the car and ran home.

Police don't know the child's name and went from door to door looking for information.

They found two children known by the nickname "Boss," and both were safe at home.
