The city of Atlanta is now offering a $5,000 bonus to veterans and reservists who complete training to become police officers and fire fighters.

The bonus for honorably discharged veterans of the United States armed forces and service members currently in a reserve capacity will also provide an additional hiring incentive as the Atlanta Police Department continues to actively recruit new officers.

A fund to pay for the bonuses was established in the Fiscal Year 2018 budget put forth by the Reed Administration, which took effect July 1. It is payable to recruits who successfully complete police and fire academy training.

The bonus is just one of several incentives currently offered for police officers. Through the Atlanta Police Foundation, police officers and recruits are also eligible for a one-time relocation bonus of $1,000, housing assistance if they choose to live in the city, and tuition reimbursement to further their studies.

The Atlanta Police Department continues to hold job fairs at 9 a.m. July 22 and 7 p.m. July 25 at Public Safety Headquarters at 226 Peachtree Street SW.
