Motorists, brace yourselves: The resurfacing of the Downtown Connector, a nine-month job in the heart of Atlanta, begins July 17, the Georgia Department of Transportation advises.

Crews will begin resurfacing about six miles of the Connector (I-75/I-85) northbound and southbound from just south of University Avenue to the Brookwood Interchange. For information: http://bit.ly/29lrmtb

Resurfacing will start on the shoulders, gore areas between the lanes and ramps, and entrance and exit ramps, which will be closed while work is underway. When required, lane closures will take place 9 p.m.-5 a.m. weeknights and 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday on weekends, excluding major holidays.

The HOV lane will be opened to general traffic when necessary. Certain restrictions may be necessary for Braves, Falcons and Tech football games and the Music Midtown Festival.

The $13.8 million, C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. Inc. project is to be completed by April 2017. The Connector was last resurfaced in 2008 and handles nearly 350,000 vehicles a day.
