Alpharetta is inviting residents to weigh in a proposed expansion of its downtown open container district for consuming alcohol.

Letters have been mailed to property owners in the area being considered for expansion. “Now, we are reaching beyond those boundaries to the city at large,” said Alpharetta City Clerk Coty Thigpen.

The City Council will formally consider the proposed changes at a meeting 6:30 p.m. June 5 at City Hall. Residents also can comment ahead of the meeting by contacting Thigpen at cthigpen@alpharetta.ga.us or 678-297-6003.

The open container district currently is the downtown core centered on Main Street and Milton Avenue and bounded by Church Street on the north, Haynes Bridge Road on the east, Old Milton Parkway on the south and Roswell Street on the west. The proposed expansion would reach north along Main nearly to Winthrop Park Drive, and east along Old Milton to Westside Parkway. It also would take in several additional blocks west of the core.
