Gwinnett poised to send first Latina to General Assembly

Gwinnett County is poised to elect the first Hispanic woman to serve in the Georgia General Assembly.

Brenda Lopez defeated fellow Democrat Jaime “Jay” Trevari in state House of Representatives District 99. No Republican is running in the Norcross-area district. Unless an independent files to run later, Lopez will be unopposed in the November general election.

Lopez and Trevari sought to replace state Rep. Hugh Floyd, D-Norcross. Lopez's election could signal the growing political strength of Georgia's booming minority population.

Lopez, a local attorney, recently told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that a more diverse General Assembly would look more like Georgia. Trevari, a retired telephone company worker and longtime Democratic Party activist, agreed the Legislature needs more diversity, but said diversity of thought is what matters.
