Clayton County has enacted a permanent ban on burning yard debris in unincorporated areas of the county in response to complaints from people with health problems.

County commissioners voted unanimously this week to impose the ban. The new rules allow for residential fire pits and grills meant to cook food and fires set for training firefighters. The ban does not affect residents living within the borders of cities in the county.

The ban carries a $1,000 fine for violations.
