Emory endowment reaches record $6.7 billion

Two metro Atlanta natives were named 2016 Rhodes Scholars this week.

Emory University student Leah Michalove and Oberlin College student Machmud Makhmudov both won what is widely considered to be one of the most prestigious scholarships in the world.

The two Georgia students will be awarded two or three years of study at Oxford University in England, starting in the 2016 academic year.

Michalove is a senior at Emory University and a Sandy Springs native. She is the 19th student from Emory to be selected for the prestigious scholarship, according to the university.

Makhmudov is an Oberlin College senior hailing from Lilburn. He immigrated to Atlanta from Uzbekistan and currently studies politics. He interned at the office of Congressman John Lewis.

In total, 32 American university students were selected as 2016 Rhodes Scholars.

California had three students named as Rhodes Scholars, more than any other state in the U.S. (note: California is guaranteed at least two Rhodes Scholars every year. Southern California is its own district, while most other states share districts with other states).

Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas also had two winning students each.
