ICYMI: In October, DeKalb Schools students will attend school an extra 20 minutes

DeKalb County Schools will be extended for 20 minutes each school day in October to make up for days missed last month due to Tropical Storm Irma.

The school day will end 20 minutes later for all DeKalb County School District students, as students begin making up days lost to the storm known as Irma.

The district shuttered schools four days last month as the storm raced through Florida and Georgia, causing damage from heavy winds and rain that downed power lines and trees and electricity for more than 1 million Georgia residences.

Superintendent Steve Green initially announced two weeks ago that the district would extend the school day by 20 minutes from today through the end of the semester on Dec. 20. Students also would report to school during Election Day on Nov. 7. That changed last week, and the district sent out a second announcement saying classes would only be extended during the month of October. Students also will report to class on Nov. 7, which is typically a day off. Two additional days will be determined through community input, the district said.
