Communities In Schools of Atlanta, a dropout prevention program, raised more than $530,000 during it’s annual dinner and gala May 17.

Communities in Schools works with students in 51 elementary, middle and high schools in Atlanta and Clayton, DeKalb and Fulton county schools. The program helps improve attendance, behavior and grades and also encourages the students to get involved in community service. It helped 21,000 students and their families this school year.

Westlake High School came in first place for their service project in providing homeless women living in transitional housing, homeless shelters, and even on the streets, with personalized tote bags filled with beauty and hygiene products.

The Anne Cox Chambers Champion for Kids Award was presented to George H. Johnson, a long-time champion of the organization, for his contributions to education and the community.
