A 6-year-old girl was flown to Atlanta to being attacked by a dog in Troup County on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The girl, whose name hasn’t been released, was playing with her father in the yard of their home off Butts Mill Road shortly before the incident, Troup County Chief Marshal Lonza Edmondson told AJC.com. The house is near Pine Mountain and is just north of the Harris-Troup county line.

The girl’s father briefly went inside the house, which is when the black and white dog pounced. The breed of the dog is unknown, and authorities have not been able to find it, he said.

The girl was flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where she remains. Edmondson said the “young girl is recovering well” from a dog’s bite.

Edmondson said the dog’s owner could face charges or be responsible for medical bills. He added that the dog would be quarantined for 10 days to be checked for rabies if found.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Troup County Marshal’s Office at 706-883-1627.
