Two held in Stone Mountain apartment shootout

One of two men charged in a triple shooting Wednesday near two DeKalb County schools remained in the hospital Thursday as police tried to determine what prompted the incident, which left one man dead.

Antoine Willingham, 24, was found fatally shot behind the wheel of his car near the leasing office of the Highland Forest Apartment complex in Stone Mountain, DeKalb police Maj. Stephen Fore said. Investigators have charged Antariouse Caldwell, 22, and Martavis Mathis, 24, with felony murder and aggravated assault, he said.

Mathis was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday. An unidentified 14-year-old who was inside one of the apartments at 4719 Central Drive at the time was also shot but is expected to survive.

The shootout forced brief lockdowns at nearby Stone Mountain High and Hambrick Elementary schools.
