A tentative ID has been made on a body found in a river in Newton County, the coroner said Wednesday.

Authorities who answered a 911 call found the body Sunday afternoon in the Yellow River near the Porterdale Mill Lofts apartments, Porterdale police Chief Jason Cripps told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The body was stuck with other debris on a spillway, Cripps said.

Officials with the Newton County Fire Department and the state Department of Natural Resources were called in, and the body was turned over to the Newton County coroner, Cripps said.

However, some “scientific identification” will be done before the identity is released, coroner Tommy Davis said Wednesday.

No missing persons reports were filed recently in Porterdale, the chief said.

Cripps said he “can’t say it was or wasn’t” suspicious circumstances involving the body. “It’s not like there was a gun lying next to him.”

It’s the second body found in a body of water in Newton County this month.

On Thursday, the body of Johnny Green, who had disappeared while fishing, was found. There were no obvious signs of trauma on Green’s body, authorities said.
