A Conyers paraprofessional has until 6 p.m. Friday to report to jail after police charged him with hanging a boy on a chalkboard by his belt.
Antonio Cammon was charged with reckless conduct in the 5-year-old boy’s hanging, Channel 2 Action News reported. The incident happened at Shoals Creek Elementary School on May 5.
A teacher and another paraprofessional were arrested, but the judge ruled there wasn’t enough evidence to charge them.
The school’s principal, Tiwon Tony, said he heard screams from a classroom, walked in and witnessed Cammon holding the child against the chalkboard, Channel 2 reported.
“Mr. Cammon was away from the student and the student was hanging by himself,” Tony told the judge, “By an accident or unintentional, he would have taken him down and I would not have seen [the student] hanging on the hook.”
Cammon’s attorney told Channel 2 it was all an accident.
“When he lifted that child, there was a hook behind the child and he accidentally got caught on that hook,” Cammon’s attorney told Channel 2 Action News.
Tracy Davis, the boy’s grandmother, wasn’t pleased with the charges.
“I don’t understand it,” Davis said. “Who’s going to help my grandbaby get through all this?”
