A Middle Georgia deputy shot and killed a man who barricaded himself inside a home after a deadly stabbing attack, officials said.

Gavin Williams, 27, died at a Macon hospital, Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones told The Telegraph.

One of his victims, Vivian Hughes, 71, died from multiple stab wounds, the newspaper reported. Her husband, Sanders Hughes, 72, was treated for multiple wounds on the face and chest, according to The Telegraph. He was still in critical condition Wednesday morning, according to a Facebook post by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when a neighbor alerted authorities about what was described as two people lying in the front yard of a house near Macon, officials said.

Williams was on the scene but ran away even after a deputy used a Taser and pepper spray on him, the newspaper reported. SWAT officers were called in after Williams ran to his house.

Deputies used gas to force Williams from the home and shot him with bean bags, the newspaper reported. When that didn’t stop Williams, a deputy shot him, according to the sheriff’s office.

The GBI was asked to investigate the incident, which is routine in officer-involved shootings.

Through March, the GBI has investigated 24 officer-involved shootings in the state, spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.
