An officer was attacked while attempting to arrest a domestic abuse suspect, Athens Clarke-County police said.

Officers got a call about a domestic dispute Saturday along the 300 block of Towne View Place where they attempted to arrest Carlos Merritt, Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Epifanio Rodriquez said.

Rodriquez said Merritt walked toward Officer Gary Crosby in an aggressive manner, prompting officers to arrest Merritt.

“Officers on the scene attempted to gain control of Merritt, at which time he resisted arrest,” Rodriquez said.

Police say Merritt then threw Crosby off a couch and onto a concrete floor, where he hit his head and shoulder.

Crosby sustained mild concussions, sprains and bruises, but was released from the later that night.

Merritt was arrested and charged with simple battery, false imprisonment and felony obstruction.
