A Savannah firefighter died shortly after responding to a loading dock collapse Saturday.

Master Firefighter Michael Curry was one of the first responders at the scene where dozens of people were injured during a loading dock near River Street.

About 50 people fell into the Savannah River, authorities told ABC affiliate WJCL.

Curry was helping pull people from the water when he had a medical emergency. Officials gave Curry first aid before taking him to the hospital, officials said, but he died late Saturday afternoon.

Curry had worked for the Savannah Fire Department for 13 years.

He was also father to an 8-year-old boy.
