Second officer in Americus shooting has died

UPDATE [5:41 p.m.]: Jody Smith, the Georgia Southwestern State University police officer who was wounded in a shooting in Americus, died Thursday.

1:51 p.m.: The president of the local NAACP chapter said police acted properly.

1:41 p.m.: At least one of the officers had on a body camera that investigators will review.

1:39 p.m.: It is not clear if Georgia Southwestern State University police officer Jody Smith is aware of the death of his friend, Americus police Officer Nicholas Ryan Smarr, authorities said. Smith and Smarr were model officers, Americus police Chief Mark Scott said.

1:34 p.m.: The tipster knew Minquell Lembrick, police said. That person is eligible for a $70,000 reward established for information leading to Lembrick's capture.

1:32 p.m.: Georgia Southwestern State University police officer Jody Smith is still in critical condition.

1:31 p.m.: Minquell Lembrick had a criminal history that was 32 pages in length, GBI director Vernon Keenan said. He's a career criminal, Keenan said. "It is over with," he said. Keenan said the community can now go forward with healing. "The perpetrator is not here," he said.

1:30 p.m.: Minquell Lembrick was dead inside the house of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Americus police Chief Mark Scott said.

1:29 p.m.: A citizen notified authorities Minquell Lembrick was in a house in the 300 block of Allen Street, Americus police Chief Mark Scott said.

12:55 p.m.: Sumter County Coroner Greg Hancock confirmed Minquell Lembrick was dead inside a house that was the scene of a SWAT standoff Thursday morning, the Macon Telegraph reported. A law enforcement source told The Telegraph the suspect died of a self-inflicted wound to the head.

12:17 p.m.: "It has been confirmed that Minquell Lembrick is deceased," GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said in a statement. "There will be a press conference at 1 p.m."

12:01 p.m.: Americus police Chief Mark Scott would not say if Minquell Kennedy Lembrick took his own life.

11:57 a.m.: Minquell Kennedy Lembrick is dead, Americus police Chief Mark Scott said.

11:29 a.m.: There's a lot of movement on Allen Street. Law enforcement officials are walking away from the scene. They are removing their weapons.

11:11 a.m.: The GBI told Channel 2 Action News that they got a call this morning from a citizen and they now believe Minquell Lembrick is barricaded in a home on Allen Street in Americus.

11:03 a.m.: It appears SWAT team members are leading some civilians out of a house, according to Channel 2 Action News.

11:02 a.m.: Americus Police just escorted this woman and others out of some homes, according to Channel 2 Action News.

11:00 a.m.: Another SWAT team just roared down the street with heavily armed officers riding the running boards, according to Channel 2 Action News.

10:51 a.m.: As a precaution, law enforcement has three ambulances standing by the search scene, according to Channel 2 Action News.

ORIGINAL STORY: Officials on Thursday increased a reward to $70,000 for information leading to the arrest of a man accused of killing one officer and critically injuring another.

Since the deadly shooting Wednesday in Americus, officials have urged Minquell Kennedy Lembrick, 32, to surrender.

“Enough violence has occurred today,” GBI director Vernon Keenan said hours after the shooting. “We want you to call 911 and turn yourself in.”

Lembrick has been on the run since about 10 a.m. Wednesday when Americus officer Nicholas Ryan Smarr, 25, responded to a domestic call at the Country Club Estates apartments on South Lee Street.

Georgia Southwestern State University police officer Jody Smith was called to assist Smarr.

The three exchanged gunfire, but it is not known if Lembrick was struck, Americus police Chief Mark Scott said.

The two officers were shot and sustained head wounds during the gunfire, Channel 2 Action News reported. Smarr died shortly after. His body will be taken to Macon for an autopsy, GBI officials said.

Smith was flown to a Macon hospital and was last reported in critical condition. His status was unknown early Thursday.

“It’s a tragedy beyond words,” Scott said.

Lembrick has arrests and charges dating as far back as 2003.

Lembrick was charged with false imprisonment, simple battery and criminal trespassing in Sumter County, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections website.

At the time of the shooting, Lembrick was wanted on kidnapping and other charges. Officials were not aware of the warrant until after the shooting, Scott said.

“We’d like to express our deepest sympathies to the families and the friends” of the officers, Scott said.

Keenan said about 30 agents and 20 agencies are participating in the manhunt.

Those agencies include the FBI, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Peach County Sheriff’s Office, Byron Georgia Police Department and Fort Valley Department of Public Safety.

“We want him arrested so he can face the courts,” Keenan said.
