Police: Man who shot neighbor, ran from officers kills himself

Gwinnett County police were on the scene Saturday morning of a shooting situation.

A SWAT situation in Gwinnett County ended early Saturday when a man fatally shot himself, police said.

Police responded shortly after midnight to a person-shot call in the 6000 block of Glenbrook Drive, officer Jacob Albright said in a news release.

About 7:15 a.m., the man, identified as 34-year-old Lance Walburn by police, who allegedly shot a neighbor was seen outside his residence, which was near the location where police originally responded, police said.

The man ran from the scene, according to officers.

SWAT officers “contained the suspect’s movements as he attempted to flee through multiple backyards on Glenbrook Drive,” Albright said.

As he got near Old Norcross-Tucker Road, still going through residential yards, the man produced a handgun and shot himself once, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, Albright said.

“No officers were involved in the shooting and none were injured during the incident,” police said.

The woman who was shot, Crystal Bell, called police after she was shot twice, once in the chest and once in the arm, police said.

Walburn was possibly a Marine veteran with several weapons in the house, where he lived alone. Investigators have yet to determine a motive for the shooting.

“According to Ms. Bell’s relatives, she is only a neighbor," Albright said. "They’ve never engaged in any sort of relationship. And as far as she knows there’s no disagreements or animosity between the two of them.”

No officers were involved in the shooting and none were injured during the incident, Albright said.

Bell was conscious and alert when she was taken to a hospital.
