Fourteen families were displaced Saturday morning when a fire broke out at a DeKalb County apartment complex, authorities said.

Crews responded to a fire at the 93 East apartment complex in the 100 block of Briarlake Court about 10 a.m., DeKalb fire spokesman Capt. Dion Bentley said.

Firefighters rescued one person and several pets who were trapped inside the burning building, Bentley said. The person rescued suffered minor injuries in the blaze, but is expected to survive.

A spokeswoman for the American Red Cross said 21 units were damaged, displacing a total of 14 families.

Red Cross volunteers are on scene to provide the residents with food, clothing and other personal items, spokeswoman Sherry Nicholson said. The apartment complex is providing a place to stay for those whose homes were damaged.
