A pedestrian tripped on raised asphalt and fell in the middle of traffic before he was struck and killed by a car, Clayton County police said Thursday.

Edward Winston, 61, was crossing the street Wednesday afternoon on Tara Boulevard when he got to the center median and fell into the southbound lanes, police Sgt. Ashanti Marbury said.

Winston was struck by a Ford Econoline van. He was lying in the road suffering from severe head trauma when officers arrived, Marbury said. Winston died at the scene.

The driver, who was not charged, remained on the scene.

Winston was in town from North Carolina visiting his sister.
