A search for a car theft suspect led police in College Park to the discovery of skeletal remains behind an apartment complex.

The chain of events began when a suspected car thief led officers on a chase through Peachtree City and Fayette County, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The suspect was arrested, but an accomplice in a stolen Dodge Charger got away.

Friday night, a College Park officer’s tag reader picked up the stolen Charger.

“Another vehicle pursuit began, and a foot chase,” Peachtree City police Lt. Mark Brown told Channel 2. “Unfortunately, they were unable to grab him at that time.”

An Atlanta police K9 unit brought in to search for the suspect found the human remains in a wooded area behind the Alexandria Landing Apartments.

College Park police Chief Keith Meadows told Channel 2 he believes the remains had been in the woods for almost a year.

Police said an article of clothing found near the remains might help them identify the body.
