Officer shoots, kills man wanted on probation charge

Law enforcement officials shot and killed a man wanted on charges of aggravated assault and probation violation Friday, officials said.

Steven McQueen, 30, allegedly pointed a gun at a Cartersville police officer who tried to arrest him on a probation violation charge Thursday. McQueen got away and an aggravated assault charge was added, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in a news release.

Cartersville police officers and Bartow County sheriff’s deputies went to a home on Paramenter Street about 6:20 p.m. Friday to arrest McQueen.

After law enforcement officials evacuated everyone from the home and entered, they found McQueen holding a handgun, the GBI said.

Deputies and officers repeatedly commanded McQueen to put down the gun and fired a Taser at McQueen.

But McQueen refused to put down his gun. When McQueen pointed his handgun at the officers and deputies, an officer shot him.

Emergency medical service workers were called, but unable to revive McQueen.

The GBI said it will continue its investigation with an autopsy of McQueen will be performed by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur. Then the case will be handed over to the District Attorney’s Office.
