A police officer in North Georgia fired one shot at a man after a chase Tuesday night, not knowing that the man’s 4-year-old daughter was in the car, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported.

The Fort Oglethorpe officer’s shot did not strike the man or the girl, according to the report. The man was taken into custody after the chase ended in a crash in Tennessee.

The incident began about 10:30 p.m. when Officer James Davis tried to pull over James Farris on a license-plate violation, the newspaper reported.

When Davis got out of his car, Farris put his car into reverse, turned and drove toward Davis, police Capt. Gary McConathy told the paper.

The pursuit went into Chattanooga on I-24, according to the report.

After Farris crashed, Davis said he saw Farris reach into his glove box, the newspaper reported. The officer said Farris then got out of the car, reached into his waistband, raised his arms and pointed a "small dark object" at Davis and another officer.
