A 12-year-old girl was killed and toddler was injured Wednesday night when the car in which they were riding hit a tree, Atlanta police said.

“Preliminary information indicates a sedan struck a tree and caused the three occupants to be entrapped” about 6 p.m., Officer Stephanie Brown said in a statement.

The crash was at Glenwood and Second avenues.

"It appears that they crossed over into oncoming traffic,” Atlanta Fire Rescue told Channel 2 Action News.

Crews had to rip open the roof of the vehicle to free the people inside.

The driver, a 53-year-old woman, was taken to WellStar Atlanta Medical Center with two broken legs, according to Brown. She was stable.

An 18-month-old passenger was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. She’s stable. No details on her injuries were released.

“At this time, there are no witnesses in this incident,” Brown said.

No identities were released. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash.
