Savannah police have charged a 17-year-old man in connection with a downtown shooting Wednesday that wounded three people and the subsequent car crash in which three people were killed, according to a statement.
The car crash came as police were chasing the suspect.
Jerry Chambers is charged with three counts of felony murder and other offenses, police said.
A pedestrian who was killed was Scott Waldrup, 30, general manager of The Grey restaurant, according to police.
Gabriel Magulias, 20, and Spencer Stuckey, 17, who were passengers in Chambers’ vehicle, died in the crash, police said.
About 12:13 a.m., officers heard shots near Jefferson Street and West St. Julian Street. There was “an increased officer presence in the downtown area, working the festival” as crowds had gathered for Fourth of July festivities, police said.
One person was in critical but stable condition and two people had non-life-threatening injuries after the shooting.
After a police pursuit, the vehicle being chased crashed at Bay Street and Barnard Street, according to the statement. Five other pedestrians suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Another shooting happened about 12:27 a.m. near Jefferson Street and Broughton Street, police said. One person had non-life-threatening injuries. Investigations continue into both incidents.
Police asked the Georgia State Patrol to investigate the crash.
